So what is Web 2.0?

Some definitions of Web 2.0 on the Web include:
  • Web 2.0 does not refer to any specific change in the technology of the Internet, but rather the behavior of how people use the Internet.
  • The second generation of the World Wide Web, especially the movement away from static web pages to dynamic and shareable content and social networking.
  • Really more of a marketing term than a technical one, "Web 2.0" refers to applications that allow direct interaction between a website visitor.
  • Web 2.0 (or Web 2) is the popular term for advanced Internet technology and applications including blogs, wikis, RSS and social bookmarking.
  • One of those "cool" terms that is batted around with little definition. It refers to the "second generation" Web, today's WWW that is more interactive and participatory than the Web used to be.
Examples of Web 2.0 sites include:
  • Social networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn
  • Blogs & Microblogs, such as Twitter
  • Mashups, such as iGoogle
  • Wikis, such as Wikipedia
  • Video and photo uploading sites, such as YouTube and Flickr
  • Cloud computing sites, such as Google Docs or Salesforce.com
  • Webmail services, such as gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo
What does this mean for your customer?

Allowing access to Web 2.0 sites increases an organisations risk of being exposed to Internet based security threats. Because Web 2.0 sites allow user generated content, they present a unique type of threat. For example a blog site with a good reputation may include a malicious link in the comments section and because users believe the content is posted by their friends and people in their social network, they are more likely to trust it and click on unknown links. IT managers can no longer rely on simply blocking or unblocking sites.

Dell says Twitter has produced $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available on the company's Home Outlet Store. They can click over to purchase the product or forward the information to others.
